sogetsu story

The Sogetsu School was established by the late Iemoto (headmaster)Sofu Teshigahara (1900-1979) in 1927. Believing that Ikebana should be both enjoyable and creative, Sofu developed a school of ikebana deeply rooted in Japanese tradition yet meeting the requirements of the age. The Kakeiho method he developed was a systematic approach through several styles which made Ikebana available to everyone. By this means, Sofu spread the art throughout the world, as well as staging exhibitions of his own Ikebana-based scluptures.

Current headmistress Akane Teshigahara, has been Iemoto since 2001. She is continuing the innovative spirit of her predecessors, constantly seeking new fields into which Ikebana can expand.

Sofu Teshigahara recognized ikebana as a creative art and founded the Sogetsu School. Anyone can enjoy Sogetsu Ikebana anytime, anywhere, using any material. You can place Sogetsu Ikebana at your door, in you living room or on your kitchen table. Sogetsu Ikebana enhances any hotel lobby or banquet room, shop windows and huge public spaces. It will suit any kind of space, Japanese or Western and enrich its atmosphere.
